Thoughts of Devotion:
We read in the Bible of King Solomon, a man greatly blessed by God. The Bible describes him as a person with great wealth, property, long life and good name over all the earth. I ask, who among us would not want to have this? Some people spend their whole lives looking for this for themselves. But surprisingly Solomon never asked God for any of these things. His request was for wisdom to fulfill the purposes of God in his life. In 1 Kings 3:9 his petition says, “Therefore give to Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?”
King Solomon knew to ask God for the right things, the things of great value. His priorities were in place, he was a man with integrity and his number one desire was the welfare of God’s people! (rather than to enjoy temporary things). He understood that wisdom was more important as it states in Proverbs 3:13-14, “Happy is the man who finds wisdom, And the man who gains understanding; For her proceeds are better than the profits of silver, And her gain than fine gold.” What a tremendous lesson for those who sometimes seek the material before the eternal!
When we be careful to put the things of God in priority, God takes care of blessing everything else in our life. The Lord is pleased when we seek His will before ours, He promises to be our provider, and He will meet every one of our needs. Psalm 84:11 says, “For the Lord God is a sun and shield; The Lord will give grace and glory; No good thing will He withhold From those who walk uprightly.” If we take care of God’s business, He will take care of ours! His blessings will be poured over our lives without us asking for them. In 2016 let us look for the things that really have value, and God will bring everything else to our lives.
