Matthew 14:23 (NLT) — After sending them home, he went up into the hills by himself to pray. Night fell while he was there alone.

Personal Thought

It’s so important to maintain a devotional time, because without it we will never persevere, grow and mature in our spiritual life. The quiet time alone with the Lord is like oxygen to our spirit, encouragement to our soul. When we spend quality time in His presence something happens in us, we are renewed and transformed in His presence! It is in these moments that we receive rest and relieve our tired soul. 1 Peter 5:7 says, “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.”

To answer the question, what is devotional time? I wrote down some things that will help us define it, daily devotional time is quality time where we can have fellowship with God through the Word and prayer. It is a time that you separate deliberately with the purpose of having an intimate encounter with the Lord. Our goal must be to spend at least one hour of daily devotion. In Matthew 26:40 tells us that Jesus “came unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour?”

The purpose of a daily devotional is for us to grow in our personal relationship with God, that we come to know Him, love Him and become more and more like Him. It is during this time that we focus entirely on the Lord. We close the door to this world and its desires, and we sit at the table of communion with Him. Revelation 3:20 tells us, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with me”. Every day the Lord is at the door hoping that we open, so that He may come in and dine with us. May we open the door today and enjoy intimate communion with Him!

Topical References:

Matthew 11:29 (NKJV) — Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

1 Peter 5:7 (NKJV) — casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.

Revelations 3:20 (NKJV) — Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.

Mark 1:35 (NKJV) — Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed.

  1. Amen this morning my prayer is that God would never let me lose this quality time with him in his presence seeking for his word daily

  2. Prayer is better done alone. When your alone and your praying you stay focused on God and not at anyone else. Praying in a group is ok but as long as your focused on god!
