Until You Take Away The Accursed

Topic: We Must Remove The Accursed To See Better Days

13 Get up, sanctify the people, and say, ‘Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow, because thus says the Lord God of Israel: “There is an accursed thing in your midst, O Israel; you cannot stand before your enemies until you take away the accursed thing from among you.”

 Joshua 7:13 (NKJV)

Daily Reading Plan

Genesis 35-36

Bible Versions:

Joshua 7:13 (NLT)— 13 “Get up! Command the people to purify themselves in preparation for tomorrow. For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Hidden among you, O Israel, are things set apart for the Lord. You will never defeat your enemies until you remove these things from among you.

Joshua 7:13 (MSG) — 13 “So get started. Purify the people. Tell them: Get ready for tomorrow by purifying yourselves. For this is what God, the God of Israel, says: There are cursed things in the camp. You won’t be able to face your enemies until you have gotten rid of these cursed things.

Joshua 7:13 (NIV) — 13 “Go, consecrate the people. Tell them, ‘Consecrate yourselves in preparation for tomorrow; for this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: There are devoted things among you, Israel. You cannot stand against your enemies until you remove them.

Thoughts of Devotion:

God is always doing something in our lives, his instruction is separate yourselves and consecrate yourselves! Today as in the times of Joshua, the calling is the same. Time after time the scriptures teach us that before the Lord does great things in His people, he calls us to remove all hindrances, every sin that is an impediment to receive his blessing. The call is one of repentance and contrition of heart! As Lamentations 3:40 says, Let us search out and examine our ways, And turn back to the Lord.” A call to spiritual examination, to become once more to God in prayer, fasting and repentance before Him.

This time we see that Achan, after the conquest of Jericho, took the treasure for himself, which God clearly commanded not to do, “And you, by all means abstain from the accursed things, lest you become accursed when you take of the accursed things, and make the camp of Israel a curse, and trouble it.” (Joshua 6:18). And as a direct result of their sin and disobedience, the defeat was surely in his future! We see that the anathema represented curse and disobedience, it was the hidden sin that Achan was holding, thinking that nobody knew he was hiding it but the reality was that God knew! And the consequences ended up being very serious!

Today we have to be honest with God, because there is no reason to hide things from His presence. If anyone knows our true state, it is the Lord! In Joshua 7:11 says, ” Israel has sinned, and they have also transgressed My covenant which I commanded them. For they have even taken some of the accursed things, and have both stolen and deceived; and they have also put it among their own stuff.” Understand that His Word is like a lamp in our heart that sees everything we hide from others. Achan, instead of walking in obedience, decided to disobey, and his future was tragic, he died for holding onto that which was cursed.

Today there is still hope for us, the promise is that the best is yet to come for our lives. But it will be necessary to remove all the things that will stop us from serving God. There is no room for anathema in our lives! God gives us one more chance to change our future and experience all that He has promised us.

Foundational Scriptures:

Joshua 3:5 (NKJV) — And Joshua said to the people, “Sanctify yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do wonders among you.”

Exodus 19:10 (NKJV) — 10 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their clothes.

Lamentations 3:40 (NKJV) — 40 Let us search out and examine our ways,And turn back to the Lord;

Joel 2:17 (NKJV) — 17 Let the priests, who minister to the Lord, Weep between the porch and the altar; Let them say, “Spare Your people, O Lord, And do not give Your heritage to reproach, That the nations should rule over them. Why should they say among the peoples, ‘Where is their God?’”

Joshua 7:11 (NKJV) —11 Israel has sinned, and they have also transgressed My covenant which I commanded them. For they have even taken some of the accursed things, and have both stolen and deceived; and they have also put it among their own stuff.

1 Corinthians 5:13 (NKJV) — 13 But those who are outside God judges. Therefore “put away from yourselves the evil person.

Joshua 7:20-21 (NKJV) — 20 And Achan answered Joshua and said, “Indeed I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel, and this is what I have done: 21 When I saw among the spoils a beautiful Babylonian garment, two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold weighing fifty shekels, I coveted them and took them. And there they are, hidden in the earth in the midst of my tent, with the silver under it.”

  1. This morning us as Christians need to examine our lives and remove everything that draws us away from God !

  2. God knows everything and I’ve always like to share with everything and God will bless those that truly have a relationship him

  3. Everyday we should keep a pure and clean heart, removing anything that doesn’t satisfy God. Examining our life and really pushing for greater things that God has for us! ❤️

  4. My prayer this morning is that the Lord may purge my life of everything that is not pleasing to him so that I may receive the better things he has in store! May we not miss out on his coming blessings, but may we all be ready with pure lives.
