Do Not Grieve the Holy Spirit

Topic: Sin Separates Us From Having Communion With The Holy Spirit

30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

Ephesians 4:30 (NKJV)

Daily Reading Plan

Galatians 1-3

Bible Versions:

Ephesians 4:30 (MSG) −30 Don’t grieve God. Don’t break his heart. His Holy Spirit, moving and breathing in you, is the most intimate part of your life, making you fit for himself. Don’t take such a gift for granted.

Ephesians 4:30 (NIV) −30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

Ephesians 4:30 (NLT) −30 And do not bring sorrow to God’s Holy Spirit by the way you live. Remember, he has identified you as his own,[a] guaranteeing that you will be saved on the day of redemption.

Devotional Thoughts:

The Holy Spirit is a person, the third person of the Trinity. The Bible teaches us that we as believers can grieve the Holy Spirit through our words and actions. How terrible and unfortunate it is when we act in such a way that instead of pleasing God, we grieve and offend Him. This was the condition of a man since his fall. In Genesis 6:3, it tells us, ” And the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.”

Sometimes we think our actions do not have consequences, that what we do, God does not see, or even cares! We are wrong, as God’s children to think this way. We must understand that the Holy Spirit not only sees, but we must recognize that our spiritual condition hurts the Holy Spirit. Today we must discard everything that does not please God, and not for another day walk with things in our lives that do not please God. In Ephesians 4:22-23, it exhorts us to walk stripped of all sin, “concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, 23 and be renewed in the spirit of your mind.”

Let us now leave the bad habit of grieving the Holy Spirit, of always living out of fellowship with Him, as a root of sin in our hearts. Let us change direction and determine ourselves to walk acceptable to God. The last thing we want to do is grieve the Spirit! But it will be necessary to pray the same prayer that David prayed when he failed God, Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. (Psalms 51:11). The loss of intimacy with the Holy Spirit is the saddest thing that can happen to us. Today’s invitation is to return once more in communion with God! Let the Blood of Christ wash and cleanse you from all unrighteousness.
