Do Not Cease To Cry Out

Topic: Ebenezer Is A Reminder That God Answers Our Cry

So the children of Israel said to Samuel, “Do not cease to cry out to the Lord our God for us, that He may save us from the hand of the Philistines.”

1 Samuel 7:8 (NKJV)

Daily Reading Plan

John 1-2

Bible Versions:

1 Samuel 7:8 (NLT) — “Don’t stop pleading with the Lord our God to save us from the Philistines!” they begged Samuel.

1 Samuel 7:8 (NLT) — “Don’t stop pleading with the Lord our God to save us from the Philistines!” they begged Samuel.

1 Samuel 7:8 (MSG) — They pleaded with Samuel, “Pray with all your might! And don’t let up! Pray to God, our God, that he’ll save us from the boot of the Philistines.”

Thoughts of Devotion:

If anything marks the life of a man or woman of God it is prayer. The Prophet Samuel is a great example of this  in the Bible. At the height of his ministry we see how the Lord through Samuel’s prayer showed himself with power and grace. We see in this occasion how God’s people were being ambushed by their oppressors. The entire village was frightened by the Philistines, ” Now when the Philistines heard that the children of Israel had gathered together at Mizpah, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the children of Israel heard of it, they were afraid of the Philistines.”(1 Samuel 7: 7).

As a result of the cry of a man of God in prayer , the Lord delivered a whole nation of their enemies! This miraculous deliverance of the people was not done with sword in hand, or by a large army but with the powerful weapon of prayer. Samuel was a protector and liberator of Israel, not the sword as Gideon, nor arm strength like Samson, but by the power of prayer to God. Thank God He still answers the cry of His servants. When we cry out with our whole heart we will surely see our enemies defeated!

All we have to do on this day is to cry to God for help and relief. He is more than willing to show his power in the midst of our crisis and dilemma. When no one else can help, He will display himself as our help. We have our firm rock which never leaves us as Psalm 28:1 tells us, ” To You I will cry, O Lord my Rock: Do not be silent to me, Lest, if You are silent to me, I become like those who go down to the pit.” When we recognize that our help will not come from elsewhere rather than God, it is that we can declare Ebenezar, God has helped us this far!

Foundational Scriptures:

1 Samuel 12:19 (NKJV) — 19 And all the people said to Samuel, “Pray for your servants to the Lord your God, that we may not die; for we have added to all our sins the evil of asking a king for ourselves.”

1 Samuel 12:23 (NKJV) — 23 Moreover, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord in ceasing to pray for you; but I will teach you the good and the right way.

Psalm 28:1 (NKJV) — 28 To You I will cry, O Lord my Rock: Do not be silent to me, Lest, if You are silent to me, I become like those who go down to the pit.

Psalm 39:12 (NKJV) — 12 “Hear my prayer, O Lord, And give ear to my cry; Do not be silent at my tears; For I am a stranger with You, A sojourner, as all my fathers were.

James 5:16 (NKJV) — 16 Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.

  1. It’s amazing what God is able to do when we cry out him ,for example defeating the philistines without even fighting ,if God is willing to do that for the children of Israel much more for us.Thank God I’m able to reach for his love ,protection and his power that helps us

  2. Prayer is an important part of your spiritual life, prayer is a personal conversation with God. It’s a silent conversation, but meaningful to both you and God.
