Thoughts Of Devotion:
Throughout the history of the people of Israel we see that they had great difficulties and conflicts with one of its strongest enemies, the Philistines. We see that for about twenty years they continually lived under the oppression of the Philistines, until the day came when God delivered them! It was in response to this miraculous intervention of the Lord, that the people placed a stone as a reminder of great help and deliverance from God. God’s help was marked as a testimony to the miraculous provision of God for the people of Israel.
History teaches us that Samuel took a stone. One may ask, why a stone? What did the stone mean? In Israel, as well as other places in the Middle East, memorial stones were used to mark important events. The stones represented strength, permanence, something that was lasting. It is believed that even the name Ebenezer was written in the same rock. This stone was an object that would remain a testimony for future generations. These generations could later touch, feel, and see the rock, bringing to mind the provision that took place in the village.
Today in the same way, we can bring to mind the great faithfulness of God toward us. God certainly has been faithful, and His provision has never failed us! We have come to see that God’s help, that is our Ebenezer, through the years has been available in an effective, timely and consistent manner. Our hope rests on what God has done in our time and as the years have passed. It reminds me of Psalm 71:17 which says, ” O God, You have taught me from my youth; And to this day I declare Your wondrous works.” Let us pray on this day that we live always confident in His provision. Today we can declare Ebenezer, Thus far the Lord has brought us!
Psalm 71:6New King James Version (NKJV) — 6 By You I have been upheld from birth; You are He who took me out of my mother’s womb. My praise shall be continually of You.
Psalm 71:17New King James Version (NKJV) — 17 O God, You have taught me from my youth; And to this day I declare Your wondrous works.
Isaiah 46:3-4 (NKJV) — 3 “Listen to Me, O house of Jacob, And all the remnant of the house of Israel, Who have been upheld by Me from birth, Who have been carried from the womb: Even to your old age, I am He, And even to gray hairs I will carry you! I have made, and I will bear; Even I will carry, and will deliver you.
Acts 26:22 (NKJV) — 22 Therefore, having obtained help from God, to this day I stand, witnessing both to small and great, saying no other things than those which the prophets and Moses said would come—
