Teach Us To Pray

Topic: We Must Learn To Pray

Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.”

 Luke 11:1 (NKJV)

Daily Reading Plan

Luke 9-10

Bible Versions:

Luke 11:1 (MSG) — 11 One day he was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said, “Master, teach us to pray just as John taught his disciples.”

Luke 11:1 (NIV) — 11 One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”

Thoughts of Devotion:

The greatest model of prayer we have is the example of our Lord Jesus Christ. Much of his ministry, while he was on earth was having communion with his Father in prayer. We are able to see that Jesus spent a whole night without sleep, in prayer and supplication as Luke 6:12 says, “Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.” The disciples were privileged to see in person how Jesus modeled prayer. Their lives were impacted by the way Jesus prayed! So much so that they asked Jesus to teach them and to instruct them to pray effectively.

I think this is a great challenge for many, to get to pray properly and effectively. We must be honest and admit that many times we pray wrong. In James 4: 2-3, it tells us, “You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.” In how many occasions has this happened to us, that we ask for something in prayer and that if you look closely, is motivated by the wrong desires or it is outside the will of God.

Then the challenge this morning is not only to spend a time of prayer, but also be assured that we are praying properly, only then our prayer will become effective! This is why the Psalmist said, “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart Be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer.” (Psalm 19:14). Today we must ask the Holy Spirit to search our hearts and our request so that we can be according to the Father’s will. Only when we learn to pray will our prayers be effective and powerful!

  1. “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart Be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer.” (Psalm 19:14).

  2. Praying isn’t just an ordinary action, it’s a way of life. It is a personal conversation with God it is a skill we will master in heaven. If you are good at prayer then that makes you a prayer warrior!

  3. Prayer is truly a vital tool to Christians, it’s the way that we communicate to our father, in which he ALWAYS hears us. My prayer is that we may all genuinely learn how to pray!!!
