It Is More Blessed To Give Than To Receive

Topic: There Is Provision For Those That Are Generous

I have shown you in every way, by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ”

Acts 20:35 (NKJV)

Mark 15-16

Bible Versions:

Acts 20:35 (NLT) — 35 And I have been a constant example of how you can help those in need by working hard. You should remember the words of the Lord Jesus: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ”

Thoughts Of Devotion:

In occasions it seems like for some the Bible makes no sense, specially when it says, there is more blessing in giving then in receiving! For a person that doesn’t practice generosity, this would be contradicting. How is it possible for it to be better to give something, instead of receiving something? We know that the criteria of this world is very different, a person that lives under the economic system of this world thinks about how to receive more, and some even how they can steal instead of give! The mentality is, the more I have the happier I will be. The more money I have the more things I’ll possess.

But at the light of the Word of God, it is the contrary! Giving is exalted above receiving. Giving makes us more to the likeness of Christ, because his character is giving and generous. 2 Corinthians 8:9 tells us, “You know the generous grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. Though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty he could make you rich.” He gave everything, so that today we could enjoy the riches of his glory.

The Lord challenges us today that we would give with generosity. That our thoughts would daily be, how can I be more generous with God? Like Isaiah 32:8 tells us, “But generous people plan to do what is generous, and they stand firm in their generosity.” For those of us that  propose to be this way, The Lord will take care of providing for us. When we give to Him generously, we can be sure that God will be faithful towards our lives. The promise is secure, “Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back. ” (Luke 6:38). Today will be different because we will decide to give and not only wait to receive!

Foundational Scriptures:

Matthew 10:8 (NKJV) — 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cure those with leprosy, and cast out demons. Give as freely as you have received!

Isaiah 32:8 (NKJV) — 8 But a generous man devises generous things, And by generosity he shall stand.

2 Corinthians 8:9 (NKJV) — 9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich.

Luke 6:38 (NKJV) — 38 Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.”

  1. When you give, give with a good heart. Is a blessing to give than to receive. Selfishness is a sin and is dishonorable. Giving shows who you are, a giver or a keeper. Why don’t we all ask ourselves are you a giver or keeper?
