A Great Number Of Fish

Topic: Our Provision Is In Our Obedience To His Word

But Simon answered and said to Him, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net.” And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking.

Luke 5:5-6 (NKJV)

Daily Reading Plan

Mathew 27-28

Bible Versions:

Luke 5:5-6 (NLT) — “Master,” Simon replied, “we worked hard all last night and didn’t catch a thing. But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.” And this time their nets were so full of fish they began to tear!

Luke 5:5-6 (MSG) — Simon said, “Master, we’ve been fishing hard all night and haven’t caught even a minnow. But if you say so, I’ll let out the nets.” It was no sooner said than done—a huge haul of fish, straining the nets past capacity.

Luke 5:5-6 (NIV) — Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.

Thoughts Of Devotion:

What a powerful experience is described in the Word of God this morning! We watch as Peter and some of the disciples faced a challenge to their faith. For them it was a moment where their obedience was being tested by the Master. In  depended in their obedience, if they succeeded in seeing a superabundant provision! The Lord gave an order and they would be to obey or doubt. In Luke 5: 4 we see the instructions the Lord had given them, “When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”

When listening to the orders of the Lord, Peter’s answer was, Lord we have already tried and we could not catch even one fish! All our effort, dedication and work and we have achieved nothing were the words of the disciples. The circumstances were saying the opposite of the orders that were given of the Master, there was no logic to the challenge He presented them. What they were experiencing is very similar to what often happens to us in our lives. We have fished all night, all year and we have not managed to see the overabundance of God on our lives. We have tried everything in our power and it has not functioned!

The difference is that Peter obeyed Jesus’ words. He said, “In your word I throw the net!” and the result was clear, the miraculous catch, a superabundant supply to the extent that the nets broke and the boat sank of so much blessing! Today if we want to see the same result, we must build our trust and faith in his Word. Take this challenge to obey God even when things seem illogical. The Lord wants to bless our lives, his will is for us to experience His superabundant supply! But only in obedience will we succeed in seeing God work miraculously in our midst.

Foundational Scriptures:

John 21:3 (NKJV) — Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We are going with you also.” They went out and immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing.

Luke 6:46 (NKJV) — 46 “But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?

Psalm 33:9 (NKJV) For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast.

Hebrews 11:3 (NKJV) — By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.

  1. In all my years serving God I have seen God’s hand in my finances, He has always been faithful, there has been times where I only had $1.00 dollar and seen His Hand move miraculously, and not only with finances but with His joy and Love.

  2. What a tremendous effort From the part of Peter and the Fisher men, they had been at it all night ,and had labored hard fatigued, wearied, and most of all discouraging, their labor was in vain; they had caught nothing !
But Peter said ! ” Nevertheless at thy Word I will let down the net;”
Peter showed faith, and Obedience in the most deficult of times.
Sometimes labour and toil, with little or no success; can discourage us from going forward.
We must develop an absolute trust. through our Lord and Savior Jesuschrist.

When were in the midst of trials, we must get our eyes off our troubles,
We need to find encouragement in His Word,
He has His Eyes on us right this Minute,
As we endure awful trials, No matter how bad things look, He has everything under control.
Maybe someone feels discouraged right now, you’ve been toiling all night , Wondering If there’s any way out, will my suffering continue?
Will I ever be able to rejoice again?”
Here is Gods answer: ” he gives great honor to those who endure under suffering” ( Job ) A man of great endurance, the Lord was kind to him .” ( Job.42:10 ) When Job prayed for his friends, the Lord restored his fortune. In fact the Lord gave him twice as much as before”.
We must come to that place of true knowledge that God is in control.
His love for us must go beyond theological concept.
You see we must come through our trials more than conquers.
Right now, like Job at the beginning of his trial you may know God only from hearing about Him, through sermons in our life groups. That’s good, but I believe God wants us to experience his Keeping power,
He has a divine plan for you and I, But until we learn to say !
“Nevertheless At thy word Lord” then, in the midst of your greatest trials, you’ll be able to testify of God’s keeping power.
( Job.13:15 )” Though he slay me, yet I will trust in Him”

    Martin Osorio.

  3. The lord rewards us when we continue to answer to him. Lord I will follow you and only you, you know what’s best for me!!!!!

  4. We can never lack faith! Without faith we won’t get what we need. Faith keeps our life going good. Have faith in God, yourself, and even in others from time to time.
