One Receives The Prize

Topic: Running The Christian Race To Obtain The Price

24 Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it.

1 Corinthians 9:24 (NKJV)

Daily Reading Plan

Daniel 8-12

Bible Versions:

1 Corinthians 9:24 (MSG) — 24 You’ve all been to the stadium and seen the athletes race. Everyone runs; one wins. Run to win.

1 Corinthians 9:24 (NIV) — 24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.

Thoughts Of Devotion:

When reading this portion of Scripture, the Lord reminds us once more that the Christian life is a spiritual race. This is a race that we should all run together, there is no room to stay out of this marathon. The Lord calls us to run and run, and keep running! We are in a competition in which everyone has a chance to win. We run the Christian life, not to lose, but with the intention of winning the prize! That is why we are encouraged to run so that we may receive the prize.

We can all run in the Christian life, but to win we have to run under the rules and instructions that the Lord left us in his Word. For this reason we cannot take the shortest route, or step out of the way and take a shortcut. The consequences of this are very serious. Today there are some Christians who in wanting to do this have been disqualified in the process. It is extremely important to remember that it is not only to start the race, but most importantly to finish with honors!

It is possible to run the Christian race and succeed in it. Others have achieved it, there is a whole cloud of witnesses as Hebrews 12:1 tells us, “Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.” Pray that we are the ones who achieve this race and win the prize which the Lord has placed before us. We cannot give up; we cannot stop halfway, but we must stand up and run the race with courage and determination!

Foundational Scriptures:

Hebrews 12:1 (NKJV) — 12 Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,

Philippians 3:14 (NKJV) — 14 I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

2 Timothy 4:7 (NKJV) — I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.

Galatians 2:2 (NKJV) — And I went up by revelation, and communicated to them that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately to those who were of reputation, lest by any means I might run, or had run, in vain.

  1. Amen, I know I can do this!!! We just must remember that we will ALWAYS need God to strengthen us in this race!!!

  2. We must race in till our hearts content for God. Lots of people are in this race, but only few will win. The kind of race that never ends. Run and run to God for he is the best prize there is!
