Abstain From Fleshly Lusts

Topic: Abstain To Reach Sanctification

Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul,

I Peter 2:11 (NKJV)

Daily Reading Plan

Ezekiel 33-35

Bible Versions:

1 Peter 2:11 (NLT) — Dear friends, I warn you as “temporary residents and foreigners” to keep away from worldly desires that wage war against your very souls.

1 Peter 2:11 (MSG) — Friends, this world is not your home, so don’t make yourselves cozy in it. Don’t indulge your ego at the expense of your soul.

1 Peter 2:11 (NIV) — Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul.

Devotional Thought:

As we read the scripture today I wonder, how do we consider our journey in this world? Do you see it as something temporary or something permanent? Answer this question correctly will determine how we live our lives here on this earth. The Bible is very clear in describing our lives as pilgrimage and temporary. A life where we’re just passing through! Our permanent residence is in heaven. By living this as a reality, it will lead us to live our lives holy unto God. A life that reflects separation from the world and its contamination. Living away from the desires of the world!

The Bible is very clear when he says we cannot live the rest of our lives according to our own passions and impulses. Which can lead us to fall into the sins of the past. On the contrary, The Lord calls us to live lives in line with His will. So as stated in 1 Peter 4:2, “that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but for the will of God”. We must now determine ourselves to live the days that remain pleasing God in the way we live.

Every day we have to overcome the desires and passions that try to get us away from God. The fight will be intense and contrary to walking in the Spirit as stated in, Galatians 5:17, “For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary to one another, so that not do what you want”. Pray that with God’s help and strength we can achieve overcome the desires of the flesh daily. Those desires that continually oppose our walking in holiness. This is a decision that only we can take, and in doing so, experience the blessing of a life consecrated unto God.

  1. We must try not to live in the flesh because the flesh tempts you. But when you live in the flesh it doesn’t help your spiritual life.

  2. My prayer is that I may continue to ask God to rid of my fleshly desires!! It’s the only way to stay right spiritually!!!
