18 Indeed I have all and abound. I am full, having received from Epaphroditus the things sent from you, a sweet-smelling aroma, an acceptable sacrifice, well pleasing to God.
Philippians 4:18 (NKJV)
Daily Reading Plan
Philippians 4:18 (NIV) — 18 I have received full payment and have more than enough. I am amply supplied, now that I have received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent. They are a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God.
Philippians 4:18 (MSG) — 18 And now I have it all—and keep getting more! The gifts you sent with Epaphroditus were more than enough, like a sweet-smelling sacrifice roasting on the altar, filling the air with fragrance, pleasing God no end.
Thoughts Of Devotion:
If something should characterize the believer it is his heart to give and offer to the Lord things of great value and esteem. It pleases God when we offer the best to Him, when we sacrifice and present something wholeheartedly. In the Old Testament the people of Israel had burnt offerings and God was pleased when it was offered with an attitude of gratitude and reverence. In Exodus 29:18 it tells us, ” And you shall burn the whole ram on the altar. It is a burnt offering to the Lord; it is a sweet aroma, an offering made by fire to the Lord.” The smell of the sacrifice was something that pleased the Lord, it was acceptable in his presence.
But reading the scripture we recognize that it was not enough to give God the best, or something of great value, but it was also necessary to give it with the right attitude. This was what really pleased God! The attitude of the heart with right motives was what made the difference. Today we learn that our giving is not just a number, but we should also see the quality of our giving. In 2 Corinthians 9: 7, it says, “So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.”
I ask you, what is your attitude when you give God something? With what heart do you give to God? Our hearts should be filled with joy, gratitude, reverence and many more virtues that we can mention this morning when we offer something to the Lord. Let us pray that we may always have the right attitude when we give to the Lord and his work. Our offering becomes a pleasing fragrance in his presence because it is our attitude that can make the difference! That in our altar, there will always be a sweet and pleasing smell in the presence of Him who for all eternity deserves the best from us. Amen.
Exodus 29:18 (NKJV) — 18 And you shall burn the whole ram on the altar. It is a burnt offering to the Lord; it is a sweet aroma, an offering made by fire to the Lord.
Matthew 6:3-4 (NKJV) — 3 But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly.[
2 Corinthians 9:7 (NKJV) — 7 So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.
1 Peter 2:5 (NKJV) — 5 you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
