Topic: Pleasing God Is An Internal Attitude, Not An External Observation
16 For You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it; You do not delight in burnt offering. 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heart— These, O God, You will not despise.
Psalm 51:16-17 (NKJV)

Psalm 51:16-17 (NIV) — 16 You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. 17 My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.
Psalm 51:16-17 (NLT) — 16 You do not desire a sacrifice, or I would offer one. You do not want a burnt offering. 17 The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit. You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God.
Thoughts Of Devotion:
When we want to please God we must see the state of our heart. Everything begins in the depths of our being! Where God scrutinizes such as 1 Chronicles 29:17 tells us, ” I know also, my God, that You test the heart and have pleasure in uprightness. As for me, in the uprightness of my heart I have willingly offered all these things…” Pleasing God goes beyond external things, things that man and others see; on the contrary it is a matter of the heart. It is there that God sees and knows the true state of our being.
The Psalmist recognized that God did not delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, but in the broken and contrite spirit. In this is where God delights, and nothing more! In Psalm 147: 10-11 it says, “D He does not delight in the strength of the horse; He takes no pleasure in the legs of a man. 11 The Lord takes pleasure in those who fear Him In those who hope in His mercy.” For God cannot be impressed with external and superficial things, maybe others can, but the truth is that God knows the state of our heart. He knows our sitting down and our rising up, we can never fool Him!
For this reason we must be honest with ourselves and especially with God. Let Him scrutinize in the depths of our being, to change and transform ourselves to become pleasing to Him. We must pray this morning that our Christianity is not only on the outside, what the eye sees, but to be pleasing to him who looks on the internal and knows all things .Only God knows the state of our spiritual life! For this reason we seek only to please Him, let us look for approval that only comes from the Lord. Because when we please God, then surely we will be pleasing to those around us in our Christian walk.
1 Chronicles 29:17 (NKJV) — 17 I know also, my God, that You test the heart and have pleasure in uprightness. As for me, in the uprightness of my heart I have willingly offered all these things; and now with joy I have seen Your people, who are present here to offer willingly to You.
Romans 14:17-18 (NKJV) — 17 for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. 18 For he who serves Christ in these things[a]is acceptable to God and approved by men.
Psalm 69:30-31 (NKJV) — 30 I will praise the name of God with a song, And will magnify Him with thanksgiving. 31 This also shall please the Lord better than an ox or bull, Which has horns and hooves.
Psalm 147:10-11 (NKJV) — 10 He does not delight in the strength of the horse; He takes no pleasure in the legs of a man. 11 The Lord takes pleasure in those who fear Him, In those who hope in His mercy.
Ecclesiastes 5:4 (NKJV) — 4 When you make a vow to God, do not delay to pay it; For He has no pleasure in fools. Pay what you have vowed—
