Do Not Grieve the Holy Spirit

Topic: Sin Separates Us From Having Communion With The Holy Spirit

30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

Ephesians 4:30 (NKJV)

Daily Reading Plan

Isaiah 8-10

Bible Versions:

Ephesians 4:30 (MSG) −30 Don’t grieve God. Don’t break his heart. His Holy Spirit, moving and breathing in you, is the most intimate part of your life, making you fit for himself. Don’t take such a gift for granted.

Ephesians 4:30 (NIV) −30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

Ephesians 4:30 (NLT) −30 And do not bring sorrow to God’s Holy Spirit by the way you live. Remember, he has identified you as his own,[a] guaranteeing that you will be saved on the day of redemption.

Devotional Thoughts:

The Holy Spirit is a person, the third person of the Trinity. The Bible teaches us that we as believers can grieve the Holy Spirit through our words and actions. How terrible and unfortunate it is when we act in such a way that instead of pleasing God, we grieve and offend Him. This was the condition of a man since his fall. In Genesis 6:3, it tells us, ” And the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.”

Sometimes we think our actions do not have consequences, that what we do, God does not see, or even cares! We are wrong, as God’s children to think this way. We must understand that the Holy Spirit not only sees, but we must recognize that our spiritual condition hurts the Holy Spirit. Today we must discard everything that does not please God, and not for another day walk with things in our lives that do not please God. In Ephesians 4:22-23, it exhorts us to walk stripped of all sin, “concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, 23 and be renewed in the spirit of your mind.”

Let us now leave the bad habit of grieving the Holy Spirit, of always living out of fellowship with Him, as a root of sin in our hearts. Let us change direction and determine ourselves to walk acceptable to God. The last thing we want to do is grieve the Spirit! But it will be necessary to pray the same prayer that David prayed when he failed God, Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. (Psalms 51:11). The loss of intimacy with the Holy Spirit is the saddest thing that can happen to us. Today’s invitation is to return once more in communion with God! Let the Blood of Christ wash and cleanse you from all unrighteousness.

  1. What a great truth, that you can sadden the Holy Spirit by living in sinful way. I believe the Holy Spirit is sensitive to what we are going through in our lives and when we love like we don’t have it, our situations become a lot harder that we can imagine. I thank God for the continuous renewing of our minds and hearts because yet this world keeps getting worse and worse. I pray that Hod may let us be the example as the light shinning so clearly for many to see and be able to testify that he has changed us. This devotional was a blessing.

  3. The love & faithfulness of God remains the same, even when we fail him, his spirit is sensitive to our reaction thru every step or situation we find ourselves. There for we need to be closer & closer, that our dependence would be him & and only him, so his favor would be infront of us at all times. My prayers are that his Holy Spirit could be pleased by the time I spend on his presence

  4. Ephesians 4:30 (MSG) −30 Don’t grieve God. Don’t break his heart. His Holy Spirit, moving and breathing in you, is the most intimate part of your life, making you fit for himself. Don’t take such a gift for granted.

As I read today’s devotional the words in the ‘Message’ translation of Ephesians 4:30 stand out to me. “Don’t break his heart… Don’t take such gift for granted.” I pray that God would help me live a life that brings him honor. That I would never take his presence and counsel in my life for granted to the point that I break his heart. Where would I be without God’s spirit in my life? I don’t even want to imagine. Keep us from anything that would grieve you Lord.

  5. Thank you God for this devotional. I want to stay in touch with the Holy Spirit. I need to grow closer to Him and not lose focus. It’s a blessing to have the Holy Spirit in our lives.

  6. this is a bless for my life and this verse says You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so do you. Acts 7:51
