Let Us Lay Aside Every Weight

Topic: We Must Lay Aside Every Weight To Be An Instrument

Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, Hebrews 12:1 (NKJV)

You ran well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth?

Galatians 5:7 (NKJV)

Daily Reading Plan

Psalms 38-41

Bible Versions:

Hebrews 12:1 (NLT) — Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.

Devotional Thought:

When one chooses to be a spiritual instrument, it will be a lifelong process. It will be a race in which we run daily! As believers the word encourages us to run with “perseverance the race that is set before us”. The writer to the Hebrews reminded them that there was still more road to run. They would need determination and perseverance to get to the end of the spiritual race in front of them. Patience would be required to succeed, but patience is not passive, just sitting there and accepting things with a resigned mindset. But an active patience, dominating things, having endurance and persistence.

When we are an instrument in the hands of the Lord we must remember that there will be obstacles that will try to stop us or slow us down, stopping our progress and spiritual momentum! It is for this reason it is so necessary to put off every weight and every obstacle that holds us back. Sometimes it will not be easy, which is why the Lord warns us how difficult it will be to run when we carry a lot of weight, there’s certainly no place for those sins that bring us down. Those hindrances that exhaust our feet as runners!

We must ask ourselves this morning, how am I running the Christian race? What things hinder me to be a useful instrument for the Lord? It is very important to examine and answer these questions honestly. You may have ran well at first, but now we’re just moving forward at a slow pace. You may wonder, what happened? Why is it that you can not move and run with the same strength and speed. What can you do today? The answer, Take off everything that is not pleasing to the Lord! You are trying to run well, but you have too much weight on your spiritual shoulders, you should discard them for a greater spiritual momentum.

Are you willing to do this today? Make a decision and determine yourself to not allow stumbling stones and habitual sins to dominate your life. Remember Paul’s advice to Timothy, “none that wars entangles himself with the affairs of this life, to please him who enlisted him as a soldier” (2 Timothy 2:4). Do not allow yourself to be entangled by so many things in this world that then disqualify you to be an instrument for God. Get up this morning and lay aside all of your excess weight. Understand that you are called to run this lifelong race. Believe that the Lord has the power to strengthen you in this long race. Ask the Lord this morning to do the work through His Holy Spirit for you to progress. In the name of Jesus!
