who once was unprofitable to you, but now is profitable to you and to me. Philemon 1:11 (NKJV)
Daily Reading Plan
Philemon 1:11 (NLT) Onesimus hasn’t been of much use to you in the past, but now he is very useful to both of us.
Philemon 1:11 (NIV) Formerly he was useless to you, but now he has become useful both to you and to me.
God this morning has the power to change and transform lives. This was the testimony of Onesimus, a man who in his lifetime was useless, useful for nothing, a fugitive, living in darkness like Ephesians 5:8 states, “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.” He experienced a complete change from darkness to the light of Christ, from being useless to becoming useful for the work of the Lord! We see that Onesimus, after putting himself in the hands of the Lord, became a great man of God.
The radical transformation was such, that Onesimus came to serve under the ministry of the Apostle Paul. He came to be much sought after by Paul. Everyone wanted to have Onesimus serving by their side! Even his name Onesimus means profitable or useful, “a person who produces profit, benefit or interest, a person who may serve or be used for a particular purpose.” The change of Onesimus was genuine; he experienced a transformation of his character. He was no longer the same as before! He would no longer flee from the responsibility, work, and commitment. At one time Onesimus, fled from to serve and pay a price for the gospel was something very distant, very unknown, something he did not want to do.
I wonder, what about us today? Are we being useful in the hands of the Lord? Will the same thing be said about us that was said about Onesimus? It is very important to evaluate ourselves. God wants us to be useful people in his kingdom. In the work of The Lord, men and women are being looked for who show a heart to serve and support the mission He commissioned us to do. This will never take place with people who flee responsibility and commitment. Let’s make a difference today! Let’s be those who are called Onesimus, people that are useful, willing to serve under their leadership, so that the vision that God has given will come to pass.
