A Broken Heart You Will Not Despise

Topic: God Seeks Humbleness In Our Lives

“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heart— These, O God, You will not despise.”

Psalms 51:17

Bible Reading Plan

Psalms 19-23

Bible Versions:

Psalms 51:17 (The Message) “Going through the motions doesn’t please you; a flawless performance is nothing to you. I learned God-worship when my pride was shattered. Heart-shattered lives ready for love; don’t for a moment escape God’s notice.”

Psalms 51:17 (NIV) “My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.”

Psalms 51:17 (NLT) “The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit. You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God.”

Devotion Thought:

As I read this portion that David wrote, we begin by seeing a great lesson of how a broken and contrite heart is described by the Psalmist. David was going through one of the most difficult and hardest times in his life. He was deeply distressed. He had failed God and was suffering because of the weight of his sin in his heart. In this spiritual crisis God shows David the great need of having a broken and repented heart. He wants him to know one of the most profound truths of humility: The Lord in his great mercy and love will never despise a sincere heart that is shatter in pieces.

David came to understand that what God was looking for wasn’t the sacrifice of animals. He understood that before the eyes of God a burnt offering had very little value. God wasn’t satisfied with sacrifices. In another occasion God had already expressed in Psalms 40:6 “Sacrifice and offering you did not desire; my ears you have opened. Burnt offering and sin offering you did not require.” David might have even offered the best of his cattle, but to God that offering was of little value. For what reason was it of no value? Because it was offered with the absence of the most important ingredient, a sincere and humble heart!

It is very essential that this morning we may come to understand that Christian life is much more than only fulfilling with a system. The danger of living Christianity where we only want to please God with demonstrations of external actions, but empty of a sincere and truthful relationship with him. This doesn’t please God. Let us reflect and decide to draw closer to God just the way we are. Remember that God isn’t impressed by what we can do for Him, not even by the great accomplishments we have achieved.

What God is interested in is the condition of our heart, what we truly are in the most profound part of our being. A humbled heart is worth much more than all the offerings one can offer or rituals that one can do. Be careful of not always being so busy in doing something for God that we find ourselves neglecting our relationship with Him. What does God ask of us this morning? Something very simple but powerful: A humble and contrite heart. Praying to the Lord in the midst of everything, all the occupations and responsibilities of life we should never neglect what’s most important, the condition of our heart.

  1. It’s easy to stay “busy for God” and forget what really matters, which is our relationship with him and the condition of our heart before him. It’s important to keep a pure heart as we serve and live for God. May the Lord help me to have a pure and contrite heart before him.

  2. It is very important for us to keep a pure heart before god so he will be able to make those changes in us that we need in order to keep searching and follow him!!! Lord please continue to help me to maintain my heart pure!! 💖

  3. this Devotion was a bless for my life and we should keep our heart stronge with God and this verse saysFor all those things My hand has made, And all those things exist,”Says the Lord. “But on this one will I look: On him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, And who trembles at My word.” Isaiah 66:2 amen

  4. In my personal experience I’ve come to points in my walk with The Lord that I been laboring for him and yet found myself soo empty. His desire is to fulfill us with his presence but he can only do soo when we are still with an open and humble heart.
